Another inexplicably long hiatus from posting from Jess!? How uncharacteristic! But here I am, coming back to tell you about my latest obsession: Charli XCX. She released her new single “You (Ha Ha Ha)” along with its accompanying video a few weeks ago, just as I was about to give up on new music entirely. The track samples Gold Panda’s simple-but infectious “You” under Charli’s powerful and dancey vocals, a perfect combination. Blunt, accusatory lyrics (you’re dumb, you fucked it up) accompany what initially appears to be a “everything’s girly and great let’s dance about it” image track. But even with a kitty and some roses in the first few shots, the video soon displays a bunch of alt-punk girls, including someone who appears to be Wednesday from the Addams Family, loading and firing machine guns (they proceed to dance about it.) Talk about girl power. This video has already gotten a ton of flack for “promoting gun violence,” but I’m pretty sure that if guns were loaded with lipstick instead of bullets as shown here, a ton of our problems would be solved.

Charli XCX will be touring with Marina and the Diamonds this Spring, and I will be going to so many shows they might as well put my name on the posters. Check out the dates! No guarantees that I won’t sing really loud and out of tune into your ear.

Sometimes, you just gotta sit down and listen to some country music.  This isn’t one of those times.  Right now, you just gotta get up and “dance” (flail around) to this catchy new remix!

“Secret Lover” is the only song available by That Work at the current time, and I hadn’t given the song a listen until this mix appeared in my life.  It came upon me like a random Facebook friend request: even though I had no idea who it was at first, I soon realized that they were more familiar than I thought and totally awesome. “Secret Lover” has this great appeal that reminds me of many other dance-pop songs while remaining unique and memorable.  The keyboard beat and dance-y hooks keep pushing me back to the replay button!  These guys (or guy, I still have no idea) got lucky that I absolutely love their one song in existence. They would have gotten it if I didn’t. And by “gotten it” I mean gotten another chance to do better next time, because who am I kidding this song is fantastic.

My goodness, this song is making me blush! Adorbs! What an appropriate song to kick off summer, am I right?

Jillboard.com readers, meet Alphabeat, Alphabeat, meet the world. (Err, but perhaps the world already knows all about you guys? I’m not sure, but I’ve only just met you tonight, and boy did y’all make my heart skip a beat).

‘Vacation’ is a fun, flirty, whimsical little ditty by Danish pop band Alphabeat, and it totes has all the qualities I could ever ask for in my ideal summer anthem:

    - Heavy 80′s sound
    - It makes me feel so… carefree! Like, hair down, windows down, now please
    - Lyrics are catchy as hell
    - 100% danceability
    - Vocals got some delightful duet action
    - The music video is equally as adorable
    - Um, maracas… Enough said

So if any of you have been contemplating on whether or not you should go on that summer trip you’re still not sure if you can afford… Well, I think you should put your feet in the sand and have yourself a vacation.

So Kimbra’s hit song “Settle Down” is basically about how much she wants to start a family and get married, live a classy monogamous life and all that.  This is an interesting topic to remix, because electronic remixes typically say “I want to wake up very naked in a strange van.”  But hey, lyrical content doesn’t even phase me in this super dancy and memorable reworking.  While keeping most of the vocals intact, Feature Cuts manages to transform this soulful song into something much more booty-shakeable.  I like it so much, I even sing along to the pure gibberish parts! Do you know how hard that is?! Listen to this song. Do it for me. Do it for Kimbra. But mostly me.
